The Opportunity

Tetra Tech is adding a Tractor Operator to our Discipline team based in Fort A.P. Hill, VA. Candidates must live in the Bowling Green VA vicinity and be a US citizen due to the client we service.

Your Role

  • Provide facilities maintenance support to service grounds, and equipment
  • Operate a variety of construction and heavy equipment
  • Operate vegetation management equipment including mowers
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

A Tractor/Mowing Machine Operator is responsible for managing and operating mowing equipment, typically in large-scale landscaping, agricultural, or municipal maintenance settings. This individual must possess a thorough understanding of various mowing machines, such as mowing tractors, riding mowers, walk-behind mowers, and complex agricultural cutting devices, ensuring the upkeep of vast green spaces. The role is crucial in maintaining the aesthetic appeal and functionality of these expansive areas through the application of their skills in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting mowing machinery.

The role goes beyond simply cutting grass; it involves pre- and post-mowing activities such as inspecting the equipment for any mechanical issues, performing routine maintenance and minor repairs, and ensuring that the area is free of debris prior to mowing. The operator must be well-versed in safety procedures to prevent accidents, as they often work near pedestrians or in public spaces. Additionally, the candidate may be tasked with recording their work, managing specific schedules, and adhering to environmental regulations.

Education & Experience

High School Diploma is preferred. Two to five years’ experience with construction and heavy equipment operation. Must be able to work independently or as a team member on work orders. Must be able to pass background check to enter secure area. A valid Virginia Driver’s license in good standing is required.

Candidate should possess direct experience in similar position and be located in the Bowling Green, VA area. In addition, candidate must have excellent attention to detail, customer service skills, strong work ethic, demonstrated leadership qualities, and the ability to work unsupervised and with a variety of people.

This position requires the candidate to be a U.S. Citizen due to the projects they will be working on.

Background Check: This position requires a CAC card, CUI Enclave Access and/or a Security Clearance, a background check will be completed.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical demands of this position are that of a typical construction position. Lifting and operation of heavy equipment is required. Work is performed in tiring positions, such as kneeling, standing, bending, crouching, and stooping, and includes lifting, pulling or pushing of parts (normally 50 lbs. or less). Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices, such as, jacks, hoists and cranes. Good eyesight and hearing are needed to detect deficiencies

Outdoor workers can be exposed to various hazards due to their work, including extreme heat, cold, inclement weather, noise, sun exposure, and biological hazards like insects and poisonous plants.

Language & Communication Skills: Candidate must be fluent in the English language – reading, writing and speaking, etc.; Report writing requirements, etc.

Other Skills: Basic computer skills, including email (Microsoft Outlook) and ability to complete online timesheet required.
