The Opportunity
Tetra Tech invites you to consider a rewarding opportunity within our Billings, MT office, as a Geomechanics/Geotechnical/Construction Intern. This position requires the candidate to regularly work in the office or field with our team to receive one-on-one training from other staff, build relationships with fellow employees with diverse backgrounds, and more quickly and fully integrate into our team.
In this role, the successful candidate will work primarily with our geotechnical engineering teams, supporting the development of geotechnical site characterizations, construction oversight, construction materials testing, technical figure development, technical reporting, and general project support. An interest in working with a multi-disciplinary team of geologists, geophysicists, engineers, construction materials testing, and data modelers for various clients is a must. Additional project work may also include supporting other active mine and abandoned mine site projects, including environmental site monitoring, abandoned mine lands site evaluations, mine permitting and compliance, and engineering design for mine site restoration.

Essential Job Functions
We seek an energetic individual interested in pursuing and supporting various challenging projects. The successful candidate will work closely with Principal and Project Engineers, Scientists, and Project Managers on various geotechnical engineering and environmental projects. Duties will include office and field work, including but not limited to sample and data collection.
Office work will include preparing comprehensive inventories of site features; rapidly understanding, updating, and improving complex Excel spreadsheets; preparing technical memoranda and reports; preparing basic CAD- or GIS-based figures; conducting construction materials testing and completing quality checks; summarizing data for input into technical reports; and creating accurate data tables.
Strong problem-solving, time management, written and verbal communication skills are required, and the ability to learn and integrate new skills and software programs (including but not limited to Gint, RSLog, APile, LPile, ArcGIS Pro, etc.). The position may require some travel, typically related to field data collection, construction oversight, environmental sampling, and site reconnaissance. There will be a minimum of 60% of travel required for this position.

Required Qualifications
- Successful completion of junior year of a 4-year accredited university in geology, geophysics, earth science, geotechnical, civil or environmental engineering, or related discipline.
- 0-2 years’ experience.
- Education and career interests should be related to environmental aspects of the mining industry.
- Must be computer literate and know MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Ability to travel and perform field tasks (minimum of 60% of travel required).
- A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state regulations is required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
- Recent graduate with a BS degree in geotechnical, construction, geology, geophysics, earth science, civil or environmental engineering, or related discipline.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS or CAD is a plus.
- MSHA and/or OSHA HAZWOPER certification preferred.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 40lbs.
- Occasional periods of time sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer.
- Frequent periods of time walking, lifting, and bending for field work.
- Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground, in all weather conditions (hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, heavy equipment, etc.) for field work and oversight.
- Ability to travel and perform field work (approximately 60% of travel required).
- Ability to work on active construction sites, work behind a drill rig, and ability to perform construction materials testing and occasional geotechnical lab testing.
- This position is based out of the local Billings, MT office and will require field related travel. This position may have potential for a hybrid work arrangement to be worked out with the direct supervisor, but the candidate must reside within 75 miles of the local Billings, MT office. This arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company’s discretion.
- Field work/oversight will include work to be performed outside, as a result may include frequent work in various environmental factors (weather, altitude, terrain, noise, etc.). This can include remaining stationary for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting, and sitting for site assessments, site walks, and other field activities.
- Office work will include periods sitting or standing at a desk, using a computer, and other office equipment.
- Part-time temporary position, no scheduled hours. Hours will vary based on project/client needs.
- Work will be performed in a field setting and an office setting.
