Description

About us

OpenTug is an AI-native software company built to support inland and coastal barge logistics. We help shippers and operators track barges, predict costs, optimize voyages, and validate invoices. Our platform, BargeOS™, brings commercial planning, voyage execution, invoice validation, and performance analytics into one connected system, helping teams reduce manual work, improve visibility, and make faster, data-driven decisions across the entire voyage lifecycle.

About the Role

We're looking for a self-starter who takes initiative, figures things out, and doesn't wait to be told what to do next. This role puts you at the center of a fast-moving product in a genuinely unique industry, with your hands on every layer of the stack across all four BargeOS™ modules. There's no narrow lane here. One day you're tackling a frontend edge case, the next you're tracing a data pipeline issue. Over time, you'll earn deep ownership of one or more modules and grow with the product.

What You'll Do

- Build and iterate on features across BargeOS™ modules

- Collaborate with product, design, and module leads to understand context

- Work with real-world data: AIS feeds, voyage records, invoice documents

- Participate in code reviews, giving and receiving feedback constructively

- Communicate with customers to understand their needs, and design solutions to meet them

- Take ownership of tickets end-to-end, from scoping to deployment

- Grow into deeper ownership of one or more BargeOS™ modules over time

What We're Looking For

Required:

- A problem-solving mindset, you dig in, figure it out, and don't give up easily

- Strong communication skills, written and verbal, async and sync

- 1–3 years of professional experience, or a recent graduate with a strong portfolio and demonstrable projects

- Solid foundation in Python and/or Django (or a willingness to learn)

- Experience with Solid.js or a similar reactive framework (or a willingness to learn it)

- Experience working in a version-controlled, PR-based team workflow (Git, GitHub)

Nice to Have:

- Familiarity with AI and LLM tooling (or a willingness to learn)

- Familiarity with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred): writing queries, understanding indexes, not just using an ORM

- Familiarity with Django REST Framework or similar API frameworks

- Exposure to background task systems (Celery, Redis)

- Any experience with geospatial data, logistics, or maritime/transportation domains

- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure basics (AWS, Docker)
